The West End of Catalina never disappoints by offering up some excellent diving. This area of Catalina is more rugged and one of CIDA's favorites plus it is great for photography and sightseeing.

West End of Catalina is one of CIDA's favorites and rightly so.  With its rugged coastline and dive spots like Cape Cortez, Iron Bound Cove, Eagles Nest, and Wild West (one of the BEST) you can never be disappointed. Cape Cortez, Iron Bound, and Eagles Nest are all in a small cove with steep rocky sloped sides along the perimeter.  Here you will find lots of crevices, ledges, and small walls with a good amount of kelp and gorgonians growing from all the rock surfaces.

Depending on who you talk to Wild West is one of the favorites. The shallower area, 20'-40' ft deep is a typical nice rocky reef with lots of kelp and gorgonians but the fun begins as you move out deeper between 50'-70' ft. This is where you'll find large rocks the size of cars and bigger with large crevices creating small cavern-like areas and some small swim-throughs. All these sites are excellent for everyone no matter what you plan to do.

This trip is best suited for

Advanced divers and above that have experience in cold water conditions including; current, swell, possible limited visibility and deep water. Most importantly, good buoyancy control is needed and surface signal tubes are always recommended.
