Trip Info

Join Channel Islands Dive Adventures on a trip to the Radio Tower and Avalon wrecks off Palos Verdes aboard the Giant Stride Dive Boat

The Radio Tower and Avalon Wrecks off Palos Verdes are exciting dives. Both lay off the Palos Verdes coast and are deeper dives. The Tower sits in the sand and the Avalon is on a reef with lots of marine life.

There isn't much known about the Radio Tower or how it ended up where it is. It is thought to be an old RADAR tower that was disposed of off the Palos Verdes coast and now lays upright on a sandy bottom. It sits in a depth of 1oo' ft. with the top at about 60' ft. It's a cool dive and seldom dived.

The Avalon was the well-known steamer that made thousands of crossings between L.A. Harbor and the city of Avalon on Catalina Island. In 1951, she was sold and a series of owners modified her, removed her machinery, and finally cut her down to a barge.  In 1964 she sank while being used for salvage work. Today the Avalon lies in about 75 feet of water, the hull broken and scattered across the rocky bottom. The remainder of the ship is flattened along the bottom, its structure providing nooks and crannies for hunters and photographers alike. This trip is best suited for

Advanced divers and above that have experience in cold water conditions including; current, swell, possible limited visibility and deep water. Most importantly, good buoyancy control is needed and surface signal tubes are always recommended.
